Built for the quirks of Santander statements

Santander UK is unusual in that its online download is capped rather than open-ended: Online Banking allows only 600 transactions per download, and the midata CSV option covers exactly twelve months of a personal current account. That cap is why so many Santander users end up back at the PDF for anything longer than a year. The statement PDF itself is a light, airy layout — plenty of white space, and descriptions that carry the merchant name, the location and often the original card transaction date, which pushes longer card entries onto a second printed line. The period's opening and closing balances are printed on the statement, which is what makes a conversion checkable rather than merely plausible.

Questions

Santander only lets me download 12 months as CSV. What about older periods?

That is the midata export, and twelve months is its documented limit; the general transaction download is separately capped at 600 transactions per file. For anything beyond either boundary the practical route is the statement PDF, which has no such cap — upload it and the whole period converts in one pass.

Santander offers Excel and Quicken downloads. Why use a converter?

Because those options only exist inside a live Online Banking session. A statement a lender, accountant or ex-partner sent you, a closed account, or a period you can no longer reach online arrives as a PDF and nothing else. If the native download covers your period, use it — it is free and it comes straight from the bank.

How do I know nothing was dropped from my Santander statement?

Every conversion is reconciled against the statement's own printed figures: the balances printed through the transactions, plus the opening and closing balances for the period. The result is labelled VERIFIED, DISCREPANCY or FAILED, and a DISCREPANCY points at the row where the numbers stop agreeing. The Santander statement to CSV guide walks through doing the same check by hand.
